Greg Slaughter - 6'11 FT

A 6-11 Fil-Am? You gotta be kidding me

Don’t
look now but CESAFI powerhouse University of the Visayas Green Lancers
is reportedly trying to enlist to 6-11 Gregory Fuentes-Slaughter from
Virginia, USA to bolster its line-up in the coming season. Slaughter
was first reported to join the University of Cebu Webmasters but
changed his mind after receiving a generous offer from UV. It was UC
who first discovered Slaughter but UV found a way to sneak in and grab
the Fil-Am giant behind their backs.
“It is very upsetting because we thought that he will play with us.
But UC never prevents its players from seeking greener pastures. UV
made a monetary offer which UC could not counter. We could give him a
good education, an ample practice allowance, but that’s about it,” said
UC head coach Rhoel Gomez. UC was all set to partner Slaughter with the
6-9 gangling teenager Junmar Fajardo in UC’s young frontline but as
fate would have it, it was not meant to be.

Slaughter has not made any decision yet and will weigh down all his options but it looks like UV has the inside track.
“I have spoken with Slaughter’s uncle and he told me that they will
no longer look for other schools, including those in Manila, because
they are satisfied with UV’s offer,” Gomez said.
UV head coach Elmer Cabahug confirmed that they have already
recruited Slaughter, and made him an offer he could not refuse. “We
assured him that we will take care of him after his playing years are
over. If he wants to pursue his ambition to go professional, we will
help him achieve that,” Cabahug said.
Slaughter was reportedly offered a P25,000 monthly allowance by the school although this has not been confirmed yet.
“It is not about the money. It is more on the privileges that even
their relatives could enjoy. You see, Sir Eddie wants the players to be
able to help their families while playing,” said Cabahug. Not only do
players get to study at the university for free, but the their
relatives could also go to the school for free as well.
Cabahug has steered UV to six straight CESAFI championships. The
possible entry of Slaughter to the UV fold will no doubt boost the
school’s chances in the National Inter-Collegiate league, which they
stiil have not won. If Slaughter decides to play for UV, then it will
be the first time that a Filipino-American will play for the school.
Calling Chot Reyes - here’s a future national team member!

Slaughter bombs San Miguel with 12 points:

Beermen vanquish CESAFI All-Stars
By Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
Monday, September 3, 2007
Dondon Hontiveros put up a great show before his adoring Cebuano fans, cashing in 17 points to lead San Miguel Beer to a 90-86 triumph over the CESAFI All-Stars during their charity basketball match yesterday at the full-packed Cebu Coliseum.

The Beermen were trailing most of the way, including at 41-47 at halftime, but unloaded a 16-2 bomb in the final four minutes of the game to change the course of the match in their favor.

Hontiveros was backed up by Larry Fonacier and Enrico Villanueva with 12 markers apiece as the Beermen reminded the CESAFI young guns that experience is sometimes sharper than youth on the hardcourt.

The Beermen seemed too complacent at first, allowing the CESAFI stars to stage several rallies, but the visiting pros took care of the business with finesse when the game was on the line.

Ariel Mepaña topscored for the CESAFI All-Stars with 16 points. The only other double-digit scorer for CESAFI was 6-foot-11 Fil-Am Gregory Fuentes-Slaughter, Mepaña’s UV teammate with 12 markers.
After the match, the CESAFI players of coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug got some enlightening words from San Miguel head coach Siot Tanquincen, saying that if they only play harder, they would go places just like Hontiveros.

“They’re good. They play tough. They really know what to do. Just keep on practicing and play their best at all times,” said Tanquincen.

Hontiveros plans to donate proceeds of the highly-successful event to finance scholarship grants to poor but deserving students.

Last year, Hontiveros spearheaded two similar events for-a-cause. Income of the first event was donated to the landslide victims in Guinsaugon, Leyte, while the second was for the benefit of the less privileged kids of Don Bosco Boys Home, which holds a special place in Dondon’s heart being a Bosconian.

The scores

SMB (90) - Hontiveros 17, Fonacier 12, Villanueva 12, Espinas 9, Wilson 8, Calaguio 7, Eman 7, Tugade 7, Ildefonso 6, Gonzales 3, Tenorio 2

CESAFI All-Stars (86) - Mepaña 16, Slaughter 12, Zanoria 9, Llanto 8, Deputado 7, Abellanosa 6, Berame 6, Abobo 5, Llanete 4, Luga 4, Ramirez 3, Gudez 2, Malinao 2, Rogado 2
